Puppies need to be guided into adulthood with training, but yet, they need to be puppies and learn how to play. In our puppy classes, we teach the basics and emphasize socialization.(6 week session) Beginnner Class (Dogs age 6 months and up) These classes also teach the basics, but are a bit more structured. As dogs mature, their play styles change, so our focus is more on training than on socialization. (6 week session) Advanced & Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Class (Dogs age 6 months and up) Once your dog has the basics down, we work on “proofing” the behavior. We work on getting your dog to focus on you and not be distracted by outside influences. We’ll teach a few tricks, too. Does your dog need to work on a few of the basics? Does your dog love everyone he or she meets? If you answered yes to both questions, your dog is CGC material! We will fine tune your dog’s greeting styles and social manners. At the end of the session, your dog will be tested to see if he or she is a Canine Good Citizen. If your dog passes the test, he or she will be CGC certified through the American Kennel Club. Difficult Dog Classes: Barkers and Shy Dog Class (must contact shelter director to register) Some dogs are fearful or anxious and don’t do well in a group class setting. Our focus in these classes is getting the dogs to feel comfortable and secure with their owners while experiencing new thing. (4 week session. These classes are limited to 4 dogs) Clicker Classes **NEW!** Using a clicker is a great way of marking desirable behavior. A clicker is a small device that you hold in your hand that makes a short, distinct "click" sound. Using a clicker takes some practice, but most dogs respond quickly to this type of positive reinforcement training. Look for Introduction to Clicker Training on the schedule. (Clicker is included in fee.) Private Classes and Behavioral Consulting If you prefer to train at home or need help with an undesirable behavior, please contact us. |
